Selection and appraisal of data

Image
Selection, as well as appraisal of the data, is among the essential components in data curation.  Data selection is the process of identifying and choosing valuable data for preservation. It involved choosing the data that needed to be curated to support the goals of an institution of support business activities (Yoon et al, 2025). The selection process requires appraising the data and careful consideration of appraisal standards.  Data appraisal entails assessing the data based on the value in records as well as physical considerations such as usability and cost (Freitas & Curry, 2016). Various key issues are taken into consideration to select and appraise data. The first consideration for the selection of data is the selection of data in line with the goals and mission of the institution (Freitas & Curry, 2016). For instance, the Universities may curate the data to support research activities. The curated data may promote future reuse of the data by other ...

Data collection and digital repositories Digital repositories Digital repositories are digital platforms used to store and manage digital information. Various types of resources are managed in digital repositories, including documents, images, videos, datasets, audio files, and other digital materials (Khan et al, 2022). Digital repositories rely on various tools and technologies for effective storage, management, and dissemination of digital content. The first technology commonly used is DSpace. This is an open-source software program that is used to create and develop an institutional repository. These are commonly used in academic institutions where they are used to support the preservation of scholarly works. Dspace accommodates the information in various formats such as   PDFs, images, and others. Dspace offers opportunities for users to access and download information resources ( Verdugo et al, 2020) .  Video link provides a brief description:  See the vi...

Models for information literacy

Models for information literacy This week, our lesson centred on the models of information literacy. In our lesson, we discussed that there are a number of models of information literacy, guides in the information search process. Our lesson highlighted that these models play a role in influencing lifelong learning, and the skills offered by the models may be applicable even outside the learning environment. The model may guide information searching for work purposes, business and other purposes. Our discussion centred on 2 models, which are the Kuthalhul model and the Big 6 model. The Kuthahul model The Model was developed in 1991, by Carol Kulthul. It comprises seven stages for information search. The first stage in initiation stage. Under this stage, an individual becomes aware that he/she needs lacks knowledge and that one feels uncertainity due to that lack of knowledge. This shows that one feels that he or she needs information to address the knowledge gap. The sec...

Information literacy education

Models of teaching information literacy skills Information literacy forms one of the components of the Information behaviour and literacy education course. This entails he ability of an individual to access, locate, evaluate and use information ethically. Our figures centred on the models teaching information literacy skills. We focused on the models as developed by the American Library Association. Under the ALA models, some standards support the use of teaching information literacy in higher education. Each standard has key performance indicators. The first standards we looked at were: the information literate teacher education student defines and articulates the need for information and selects strategies and tools to find that information. This suggests that an individual who is information literate is able to know what kind of information is needed to address the specific needs. The individual is further able to develop the question to clarify the needed information...

Information Behaviour and Literacy Education    Summary of session 2 Paradigm shift Session 2 of the information behaviour and literacy education course focused on a number of areas in regards to information behaviour. The Lesson stressed an important aspect in Library and Information Science (LIS), which is concerned with the shift from the system to the user-centred approach. The shift has moved towards understanding the behaviour of the users. This involves understanding the information needs of the users, the preferences, as well as their satisfaction with the available information services. Additionally, the information behaviour seeks to understand how the users search for information and the preferred sources of information among the users. Additionally, the research studies in LIS, centre on understanding the users, not the systems. This is evident in scenarios where, for the libraries to acquire resources such as books, they conduct a user needs assessmen...
